It’s the most stressful time of the year. Finals are quickly approaching and while some students have experience with how to prepare for this difficult time, others may not be in the same situation. Whether you are a returning student or a freshman, I would like to offer some tips on how to survive finals!

HAVE HOMEWORK PARTIES
Study with a reliable group of friends who will keep you focused. It doesn’t matter if you are learning about different subjects. Sometimes, being surrounded by a group of people who are studying and have an intrinsic desire to succeed can allow you to stay motivated. If you find yourselves being distracted, take a brief break from studying.
TAKE BREAKS AS NEEDED
This is one of the most important aspects of preparing for finals. Studying for exams can be very stressful. There is nothing wrong with taking a break if you really need to. Try your best to set a schedule for your breaks so you don’t overdo it.
Whether it’s putting on a face mask, watching Netflix, catching up on your favorite TV show, or exercising, any form of self-care could benefit you. “How can you take care of other things if you don’t care about yourself?” (Emily Louria ’20, Early Childhood Elementary Education major)
GET PLENTY OF REST
This is arguably the most important step in preparing for final exams. It is absolutely necessary for you to maintain a balanced sleep schedule. If you do not keep yourself well-rested, it will be very difficult for you to stay focused when studying. If you begin to have focus issues, you may not process new concepts and facts well.
During the week of final exams, try to minimize the number of nights you are hanging out with friends. Try your best to get a full night of sleep (at least 8 hours) before the day of the exam.
Here are some wise words from myself:
“If I don’t know it by one be done.” “If I don’t by two, I’m through.” “If I don’t know it by three it’s not for me.” “And if I don’t know it by four, then I have to snore.”
Although this may seem silly at first, these are important standards to set for yourself so you do not become overexerted by the end of the semester. If you can help it, don’t go to bed too late because it will only hinder your academic performance.
