So you want a scare for Halloween, but you don’t want to spend $35 for a haunted house that might not even be good. I know it’s a dilemma I face every year. Once you’ve gone to one haunted house, you’ve gone to them all. Is there even a good alternative out there?
Well, of course, if you don’t mind looking for it. Let’s go back to medieval Japan. Samurai would get together for what would become known as 百物語怪談会 (Gathering of One-Hundred Ghost Stories). Basically, you have three rooms. One room would be filled with 100 candles and a small mirror. In the far room, you would tell your ghost stories, but at the end of each tale you extinguish one candle. At the end of the 100th tale, the ghost and monsters evoked by the stories are supposed to appear once the last candle goes out.
Now I know candles are off-limits for some people (residence hall people, I’m looking at you), but you just have to get creative. Cell phones, flashlights, tea lights, whatever will give off light and can be turned off will work just as well. Just make sure you have some really good stories ready. If you can find any local ghost stories, those always tend to work the best. And the best thing is, you don’t even need to do 100 stories either. The number of stories is completely up to you. And don’t forget to leave a comment if you evoke any ghosts.
