Introducing: Academic Resource Centers

by blogemu

Did you know that Housing and Residence Life added a new feature to some of the residence halls on campus?

Introducing… the Academic Resource Centers! These are new study areas located in Downing and Phelps Hall.

These spaces offer an area for students to break away from their room and concentrate in a new environment. Residents can work alone in these spaces, collaborate on group assignments, or ask questions to a student worker regarding offered resources!

Instead of climbing up the hill to get to Halle Library, one can now walk next door, or downstairs, to get to an Academic Resource Center. The goal is for students to have resources available to them in multiple places around campus!

Housing & Residence Life created the Academic Resource Centers as another means to support students living on-campus. Students often remarked that they wanted more spaces within their living communities where they could study and focus on their academics – and this is exactly what Housing & Residence Life delivered!

While there are lounge spaces in every residence hall that students can use as alternative study spaces, a lounge can also be used for many other activities and is not exclusively denoted as a study space. The Academic Resource Centers are for studying and getting academic support; students don’t have to deal with other students interrupting their studies in these spaces.

In addition to providing a study space, departments on campus host special sessions for students.

The Honors College has Graduate Assistants available on Mondays and Thursdays from 5 pm – 6 pm in Downing to help with Honors related topics or general assistance. The BrotherHOOD and SisterHOOD living-learning communities also utilize the Phelps space to host formal study tables for their student scholars.
